Jason joined conservationists and nature lovers at the Coppetts Wood Festival in north London, to highlight the importance of a local nature reserve – an oasis of peace and quiet, hidden between a Tesco Extra, the busy North Circular Road and the borough’s rubbish tip.

Alongside Morris dancers, puppeteers, a poet, clay-making activities for children and a burger-bar – among others – Jason entertained families with readings from his books.

Accompanied by the furry friends who join him at many of his events, for the toddlers, he read his simple rhyming book What Can You See?, which introduces the youngest readers to the world around them – providing him with the opportunity to write new verses, to describe the trees around them.

Primary-school age children were treated to I Like To Put Food In My Welly and A Zoo In My Shoe, as the anarchic text and zany illustrations elicited disbelief and belly laughs from young book lovers and their grown-ups alike.

They say that if you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise – the surprise for young families might have been to find Jason and his books under the natural canopy, but for Jason, the surprise was the visit from the local MP, who liked his books so much that she wanted to buy one for her nephew.

“It’s always great to meet families who haven’t yet encountered my books and one of my favourite things about these books is that you can instantly tell that they’ve done their job when you see the children burst out laughing,” remarked Jason, after what felt like a particularly relaxed and welcoming event – for a good cause.
