Jason returned to the East Finchley Festival, where he launched his third book, A Zoo in my Shoe, two years ago, entertaining families at the Storytelling Tent.

The annual event brings together musicians, dancers, artists, face-painters, creatives, local service providers and food and drink sellers, with two stages to keep everyone entertained.

The Storytelling Tent, this year, was particularly welcoming – for both families and the readers, puppeteers and other entertainers, as it sat at the heart of a child-friendly activity centre.

Jason had all three of his books with him, including the anarchic rhyming books A Zoo In My Shoe and I Like To Put Food In My Welly, which both elicited the usual screams of “No,” from the children, as he related axioms about smelly feet, swimming in trees, having slippers for breakfast and wiping your feet on your cat.

But with a younger audience than he has had at recent events, with most of the children being around 2 years old, Jason gave centre stage to his gently rhyming introduction to the world around us, What Can You See? Even the youngest children enjoyed pointing at Hannah Rounding’s beautiful illustrations and some were even able to help Jason with some of the rhymes – with a bit of prompting from their grown-ups.

“The East Finchley Festival is always a great event, but this year, the atmosphere at the Storytelling Tent was particularly inviting, with a really enthusiastic group of families,” Jason said. “I like that fact that having three books out in the world, I can adapt what I do to whoever turns up.”
