Jason ran the book stall at the school Summer Fair for the third year, reading his own books to children and parents, as well as selling second hand books and welcoming a team from the local library to meet families who are not yet taking advantage of the resources they can offer.

Parents were excited to buy books signed by the author, as well as picking up a second-hand bargain to support the school.

Jason employed a new technique to attract people to the book stall from afar – bringing a range of juggling paraphernalia, including balls, rings and clubs. Children and adults alike stepped forward for a brief lesson and many stuck around to practice; some chose to play rounders with a club and ball, which was not part of the plan. There was even a book about juggling among the second-hand inventory.

Once people were gathered around the book stall, Jason was able to draw them closer to enjoy a few laughs with readings from his anarchic rhyming books, I Like To Put Food In My Welly and A Zoo In My Shoe, treating younger children to highlights from the gently rhyming introduction to the world around us, What Can You See?

Many families left with a book – or even a newfound ability to juggle.

Some parents who remembered Jason from previous years bought a different book second time around – others excitedly asked if he had written any more books in the meantime. More had been written, he explained, but none had yet been published.

“It was rewarding, as ever, to watch people reading my books, chuckling to themselves – or to hear the laughter from younger children, unable to read them for themselves,” Jason remarked. “It was particularly fun to be able to bring one of my other hobbies into a book reading event,” he added. “Next, I will have to find a way to work some magic into my repertoire!”
