For many years, Jason has run the book stall at his own children’s school, but this year, he was invited to present his own books – and help raise some money with a second-hand book stall – at a neighbouring (rather than rival) school in northwest London.
At the tail end of the searing hot June heatwave, Jason managed to nab a table under the shade of a tree to display his own books, alongside a rack of books provided by Brookland Infant and Junior schools.
A welcoming array of parents and pupils came to the stand and were treated to readings of snippets from all three of his picture books, from the pre-school targeted What Can You See? to the primary level, anarchic rhymes of I Like To Put Food In My Welly and A Zoo In My Shoe.
Many of them left with a book or two, but others were content to walk away with stickers, bookmarks and activity sheets.
“I’m so used to running the book stall at my own children’s schools, but it’s very different at another school, where you don’t know any of the children, teachers or parents,” noted Jason. “You have to work all the harder to win them over, making each laugh and each sale all the more satisfying.”
Jason was grateful for the invite and happy to help out the neighbours.
